Abstract/Summary

Unknown soft coral species belonging to the genus Nephthea was collected from the coral reefs in Matuod, Batangas. The sample was soaked in ethyl alcohol, osterized in a metal blender and filtered by gravity filtration. The extract was concentrated using rotary evaporator and extracted several times with diethyl ether. Concentration of the diethyl ether extract by evaporation of the solvent yielded an oily residue. Thin-layer chromatography was used to determine the solvent system for maximum separation of components. The components were fractionated by vacuum liquid chromatography using a dry-packed silica gel column. Elution with hexane-dichloromethane, dichloromethane-chloroform, and dichloromethane-acetone mixtures of increasing polarity yielded two isolates. The isolated components were characterized using infrared absorption and proton nuclear magnetic resonance spectroscopy
