Abstract/Summary
Five brands of cigarettes are analyzed, namely, Hope, Menthol, Philip Morris, Marlboro short, Marlboro blue, and Winston filter cigarettes.
Two packs of cigarettes per brand are preconditioned in a closed dessicator and twenty cigarettes are chosen from each brand whose weight falls within + 20 mg of the average weight. The selected cigarettes are smoked through the smoking machine.
The tar is collected in filter pads which are then treated with acid solutions for extraction and steam distilled. Absorbances are measured by the UV spectrophotometer and compared against known concentrations of nicotine run in the UV, on a standard curve. (Absorbance vs concentration). The nicotine concentration in the samples are then analysed graphically.
