Abstract/Summary

This thesis aims to highlight a perspective into the life of a Kao Ka performer in the Philippines. Bee Hua is the head of one of the three remaining Chinese Opera Groups performing within Manila. She perseveres in all her efforts to keep the group performing and her passion and dedication are only part of what she uses to do so. This photo essay captures her efforts and experiences towards maintaining both her group and the art of Hoc Kian Chinese Opera alive.

The photo essay would follow a narrative like sequence the photos would follow a specific timeline but is not limited to this fact. Images would vary from close ups all the way to long and wide shots while still making Bee Hua the key focus of the images with this being said, the photo essay would follow a portraiture type of shooting, showing the subject's expressions and personality, as well as, character. The photos would be a reflection of Bee Hua as both a Kao Ka performer and a person.
