Abstract/Summary

Brillante Mendoza is one of the country's most critically acclaimed directors. The films that he had created showcase the cold, hard truths of Philippine society, presented starkly and without pretensions. What is notable about his body of work is his utilization of space.

This thesis then aims to explore the spatial terrain present in the films of Brillante Mendoza. Three films would be of study in this project namely: 1) Kinatay (2007), 2) Serbis (2008), and 3) Masahista (2005). His other films would be use as supplementary material to the main texts. The concepts put forth by the human geographer Yi-Fu Tuan in his book, Space and Place: The Perspective of Experience will be of use to discuss the codependency of space and place present in the Mendoza's films. The city experience provided for by Mendoza will also be explored. At the end of the day, the goals of this thesis would be as follows: 1) to provide a new critique on the films of Brillante Mendoza, and 2) to add material to the field of human geography and the study of city experience.
