Abstract/Summary

This creative writing thesis entitled Underground Playground: A Mystery Novel is about thes investigation of the death of a professor who, as the investigation goes deeper, was revealed to have a scandalous past and had led another kind of life different from what he had been known for. His death would reveal the secrets of his past and with it, his true nature as an individual and how he was able to affect the lives of others through this.

The novel would be set in the contemporary period with characters facing the horrors of prostitution and sexual exploitation, along with betrayal, revenge, and murder. It aims to depict how these realities affect people's perception of morality and their moral intentions in relation to how they view evil.

As a mystery, it attempts to explore the phenomenon of curiosity as being brought upon reading these kinds of stories that fall under this genre. It also employs the 'whodunit' formula wherein the mystery would be solved in a manner of truth-seeking similar to that of mystery stories. It would attempt to contribute to the development of the Filipino contemporary mystery genre as a form of a sense-making and truth-searching narrative.
