Abstract/Summary

Communication is an essential part of the human society. The exchange of information helps the society to be united and the awareness of a person from any events that are happening in the surroundings. Text messaging is used as a medium of communication for people to be able to send and receive information even if the contact person is far away. The researcher maximized this opportunity to further develop the text messaging system by developing a compression and encryption system that will further increase the maximum character limit and secure the contents of a single text message.

This thesis paper focuses on the design and implementation of the researcher using the arithmetic coding as the compression scheme and the playfair cipher as the encryption system for the text messaging system of an android device.

Through the researcher's experiment, it can be concluded that using the implemented arithmetic coding would yield better results than the Lempel Ziv-Welsh compression system for compressing small text data such as text messages.
