Abstract/Summary

Tilapia fingerlings belonging to three stocks, namely Nile Tilapia (Oreochromis niloticus), RedTilapia (Oreochromis niloticus x Oreochromis mossambicus) and FaST (Oreochromis niloticus) were tested using different salinity levels to measure its for tolerance to abrupt salinity change. This was accomplished by subjecting them to 0, 2, 5, 10, 15, and 20ppt salinities after direct transfer for four-day observation period. All tilapia stocks had 91-100% survival rate for four days at 0-10ppt. Difference in survival of the stocks were observed at 15-20ppt. Red tilapia was the least salinity tolerant among the three. At 15 and 20ppt it did not survive from day 1. Of the two, FaST is better than Nile. FaST and Nile have 78% survival at 15ppt to day 4. At 20ppt, FaST had 47, 31, 22, and 13% survival compared to Nile with 38, 16, 9, and 6% for days 1 to 4. The study indicated that all the three stocks can survive at 10ppt after abrupt change of salinity.
