Abstract/Summary

Mushroom corals (Scleractinia, Fungiidae) were surveyed by phototransect at seven sites in Talim Bay. More than 21 species were recorded, with Fungia repanda as the most abundant. Among transects, that taken at Toroso at a depth of five meters returned the largest number of fungiid individuals. The species Ctenactis echinata and Fungia fungites were common in sheltered shallow waters. These species could also be found at greater depths on the rocky reef slope, together with species such as Fungia concinna, F. horrida, F. paumotensis, F. repanda, F. scruposa, and Herpolitha limax. Fungia moluccensis was abundant in the deepest parts of Clubhouse, the deepest surveyed site. Other species were also present in Talim Bay, but rarer than those mentioned. Factors identified as possibly affecting fungiid distribution patterns in Talim Bay included wave exposure, substrate type, lighting, and competition with algae.
