Abstract/Summary

The purpose of this survey is to give insight on various aspects of functional beverages (FB), which are modified beverages that may provide a health benefit or are added with physiologically-active ingredients. Preliminary data gathered from product labels of 104 FB purchased from retail stores in Manila were classified accordingly for the development of fields and categories of a data repository for FB. Beverages in the study include fruit juices, milk, teas and herbal drinks, coffee, carbonated drinks, energy drinks, sports drinks, soy milk, and water. The added or reduced active ingredients include macronutrients, vitamins and minerals, natural health products among others. Health benefits of these beverages were classified as follows: 1) beverages that reduce risk of diseases; 2) nutrient supplements; 3) beverages that support weight loss or with reduced calorie contents, and 4) stimulants. The first two are the most common health benefits claimed. The number of beverages that do not indicate the quantity of active ingredient on their labels is equal to the number of beverages that do. In terms of nutritional issues, beverages that have added caffeine and L-carnitine have amounts of the ingredient close to Tolerable Upper Intake Level (UL). Beverages that have Ginseng and Ginko biloba contain amounts insufficient to produce profound physiological effects to the consumer. Based from the analyses, the study concluded that not all functional beverages are safe to consume and effective. Further development of the FB data repository is necessary to ensure consumer protection.
