Abstract/Summary

Coral reefs worldwide are under constant threat of degradation due to the combined factors of eutrophication, reduced herbivory, climate change among others. Coral reef degradation is often associated with a “phase shift” from a coral dominated community to an algal dominated one. This study assessed algal cover vis-à-vis coral cover in three fixed quadrats in each of three sites namely Galvez, Toroso and San Diego, all located in Talim Bay, Lian, Batangas. Sites were monitored twice every year during 2009 and 2010. By using the program, Coral Point Count with Excel® extensions (CPCe), cover was determined for all three quadrats for each site. Individually, the sites Toroso and Galvez showed no significant differences in cover over time for all three benthic categories (coral, algal and rock) while site San Diego showed a large difference with regards to algal and rock cover but not with coral cover. The large decrease in algal cover in site San Diego could be attributed to factors such as increase in herbivory, natural disturbances and change in abundance of nutrients. Bleached corals were observed during the last monitoring in October 2010. Overall, the expected negative relationship between coral and algae was not observed, i.e., that algal cover was uncorrelated to coral cover for all three sites over time because both coral and algae did not appear to compete for space. Also, a two-year monitoring period may not be enough to detect negative correlation between coral and algae.
