Abstract/Summary

This is a creative writing thesis entitled In Translucence. It is composed of five short stories that explore the relationship and the human struggle between belief and disbelief in the wondrous, fantastic and miraculous, and depicts different outlooks and perspectives on this main theme. These stories also explore the notion of truth and certainty and places them within the realm of subjectivity, relativity and personal experience. This project is also composed of an essay that locates Philippine Speculative Fiction within Philippine literary tradition and concludes that the elements that define Philippine Speculative Fiction have always been present within the literary tradition, and is simply part of the transformation and proliferation of Philippine literature. Finally, this project also briefly discusses the relationship between the mythological and the fantastical to faith and religion, gives a brief outlook of the present changes and issues surmising within religious institutions, and reconciles and locates artists and inspiration within this spiritual background.
