Abstract/Summary

The modern age is marred with environmental hazards that continue to cause degradation in many ecological systems and societies. In the Philippines, awareness and action are still hard-won as NGOs coordinate campaigns to help alleviate and counter this burgeoning issue.

One of the many local organizations that confront these impending issues is the center for environmental concerns. CEC is a pro-active environmentalist advocate that provides research and education to local communities. Its mission is to raise awareness and understanding of the modern environmental condition. In addition to this, the organization also provides preservation programs for ecosystems as well as education for people in dealing with environmental hazards and effects.

This project is a photo essay for the NGO's need for current, relevant and new images to communicate its cause to a wider audience. The photo essay is a collection of twenty images that illustrate how environmental neglect and careless waste management affect the living conditions of those in landfill sites in the Philippines. These photos taken in Smokey Mountain II and Payatas will be displayed in CEC's website as part of their awareness campaign. In addition to this, the organization will also exhibit this photo essay in several universities.
