Abstract/Summary

This paper is a study of F. Sionil Jose's novel Gagamba: the spiderman using the Marxist critical reading of E. San Juan, Jr. on Philippine society and culture. It aims to establish whether the novel promotes San Juan's idea of a national-democratic revolution in favor of the Filipino masses. Through the examination of characters and symbolisms, this paper exposes the novel's political and social implications. It concludes that the novel to articulate San Juan's ideas but fails to inspire radical change therefore it does not completely conform to San Juan's vision.
