Abstract/Summary
Marikina City has been known as the shoe capital of the Philippines it being the centre of the footwear industry. The shoe products were said to have export potential, however past researchers had concluded that the Shoe Industry in the Philippines have been on the decline for the past years. Studies presented the causes of the decline but none was done in relation to profitability, which is the aim of every firm that would eventually bring the industry back to its growth stage.
Using the value chain model, the study presented all the possible activities of the industry that would have an effect on the profitability. The survey data sourced from Pearl2 Project had 55 Marikina PFFI member firms as respondents. With a number of independent variables, which are all the possible causes and one dependent variable, which is profitability, linear regression method of analysis was used. The method aided in determining which among the presented possible causes significantly affect the profitability either positively or negatively.
The analysis revealed that a combination of primary and support activities exert significant effect to the profitability of PFFI member firms. The primary activities are Inbound Logistics (Percent of Local Materials Used) and Sales & Marketing (Market Segment Targeted and Trade Promotions Activities), while support activities are Recruitment and Training (Total Number of Office/Administrative Staff, Male Quality Control Staff, Total Number of Male Employees, Female Production Staff, Female Technical/Research and Development Staff). The activities which have a positive effect to the profitability of the firms are Market Segment Targeted, Trade Promotion Activities, Total Number of Office/Administrative Staff and Total Number of Male Employees while the rest have negative effect which is a decrease in profitability.
