Abstract/Summary

This paper is about the development of an Embodied Conversational Agent named Lash that acts with a social role of being a Research Assistant in the Center for Empathic Human-Computer Interactions (CEHCI) Lab of De La Salle University Manila. Using the two microphones provided by the COSMOS System, Lash is capable of warning lab occupant of their noise. On the other hand, using the Google Calendar API, Lash is also capable of reporting deadline schedules of the members or students of the laboratory. With the GRETA Architecture and the Mary TTS Synthesizer integrated to it, facial animation and speech of the ECA were developed. The speech of the ECA as it detects noise were gotten from the article called “101 Ways Of How to Shut Up” and the facial animation was based on the observations from the annotations made from videos of a female professor subject while she teaches in her Masters Class. After developing the ECA, Lash ended up to have a personality that is approachable but tends to be sarcastic, and jolly but tends to be irritable. Twenty-three (23) lab occupants who had an interaction with Lash gave good feedback in terms of the ECA's avatar, voice and personality. The minimum mean average of their user acceptance test in terms of the animation/avatar, voice, and user interaction are 3.2, 3.3, and 3.1 respectively out of 5.0. The system of Lash is acceptable to the users but needs improvement on the animation and voice.
