Abstract/Summary

The Philippines, being topographically and environmentally diverse, makes it a suitable environment for the cultivation of Coffea arabica beans. The purpose of this study is to determine if the environmental parameters of selected coffee farms in the Philippines affect the biochemical components of dried green Philippine C. arabica beans by observing if there are patterns established between the two. Dried green beans from Atok, La Trinidad, and Tublay in Benguet, Lipa in Batangas, Kidapawan in North Cotabato, and Digos in Davao del Sur were provided to the researchers, and subjected to DNA extraction using chloroform isoamyl-alcohol, protein extraction administering the Bradford assay protocol, and chlorogenic acid and caffeine extraction employing dichloromethane, in order to determine the biochemical components of the beans. The temperature, altitude, and precipitation rates of the sites were downloaded from Bioclim and extracted using Quantum Geographic Information System (QGIS). It was found that there was a significant difference in the caffeine contents of the sites, as well as the three studied environmental parameters. The results suggest that the biochemical composition between pure Arabica species is influenced by genetic variation rather than the environment. This study also depicts how coffee farms in the Philippines contain various and possibly overlooked hybrids that must be further researched on. With this, it is proposed that a uniform management system in all coffee farms should be implemented.
