Abstract/Summary

Schistosoma japonicum or the Oriental blood fluke which causes Schistosomiasis is endemic in the Philippines. It utilizes the snail, Oncomelania hupensis quadrasi as an intermediate host. The aim of this study is to identify and determine the different stages of Schistosoma japonicum in its snail intermediate host using cercarial emergence and crushing of shell method. Monthly collection of O. h. quadrasi for five months, from October 2016 to February 2017, in Victoria and Socorro Oriental Mindoro, were conducted. A total of 50 snails per location were used for each experiment. The cercarial emergence method was used to identify the presence of cercariae in photoperiod incubated water samples while the shell crushing method was used to identify the presence of the juvenile stages found in the intermediate host. Presence of cercariae was observed from snails obtained from Socorro, Oriental Mindoro. The cercariae observed exhibited a head with ventral sucker, body, and bifurcated tail measuring 250-400μm represent the characteristics of Schistosoma japonicum. Intermediate stages of S. japonicum were not observed in the snail tissues during the 5- month collection period in both sites. Snails positive for S. japonicum were infected by at least 20 cercariae. Presence of the parasite in the snails which is in close proximity with the residential area raises concerns on the transmission of infection to humans. Understanding the biology of O. h. quadrasi is important in formulating strategies to control its population. Exploring biological control approaches to snail population control should be considered.
