Abstract/Summary

Nutrition is one of the key components for a successful crustacean aquaculture. Crustaceans, such as mud crabs, use the process of removing their old shell for them to be able to grow in size. Growth is achieved by quantity of growth achieved and molting frequency. Food enrichment has been used to improve the nutritional quality of crustacean diet, and was highlighted that phosphatidylcholine was the growth-promoting fraction in phospholipids, and aided in the improvement of growth and molting processes of different crustaceans. Sixty Scylla serrata crablets were fed with three different diets containing a squid diet, 0% phosphatidylcholine diet, and 20% phosphatidylcholine diet for 14 days in a water recirculation system. Weight gain, specific growth rate, molting stages, survival rate, Molting Death Syndrome occurrences, and molting frequencies were measured throughout the experiment. No significant difference was found in the weight gain and specific growth rate of mud crabs and their treatment diets. The 20% phosphatidylcholine diet showed an increase in survival rate, successful molting frequency, and a decrease in mortality rate and Molting Death Syndrome occurrence compared to other treatment diets administered. The results of the study showed the promising effects of a phosphatidylcholine-enriched diet on Scylla serrata’s growth performance, survival, and molting frequency.
