Abstract/Summary

This study provides a narrative account of older adults in Metro Manila who have chosen to continue working past retirement age. This study examines how the coping strategies utilized by older adults and their psychological well-being contributes to successful aging. 20 older adults ages 54 and above were interviewed. Using narrative analysis, narratives were analysed. The results show that older adults choose to be engaged in work as opposed to being idle because they want to keep their mind sharp by being challenged. They also utilize coping strategies such as exercising, eating healthy food, and taking medication in order to keep their bodies fit. Furthermore, participants decide to continue working because of their desire for autonomy. Working also gives them identity, and allows them to be useful in the society. Participants identified factors, such as having healthy relationships with family, friends, and God as major contributor to successful aging.
