Abstract/Summary
This study aims to describe urban working women's motivations for undergoing facial cosmetic surgery, their history of their facial cosmetic surgery and the similar and different effects in their personal and professional lives given the importance of physical attractiveness, this research looks into how facial cosmetic surgery becomes a way for women to satisfy their desire to enhance facial attributes to gain a competitive edge among men and fellow females In-depth interviews were conducted among twenty (20) key informants which were chosen from two types of occupation: (a) advertising/media and (b) banking. Ot the20 key informants, ten (10) were from advertising/media and ten (10) were from banking. The young urban working women were 35 years old and above. There were five (5) young and five (5) old urban working women from both advertising/media and banking. The researchers used the in-depth interview as the method of gathering the information needed for the study. An interview guide was used as the instrument in the in-depth interview. Results of the study suggest that women's primary motivation for undergoing facial cosmetic surgery is to enhance their physical appearance. However, older women also undergo facial cosmetic surgery not just to enhance features but also because of their desire to look younger. Media also play a vital part and is the primary source of information about facial cosmetic surgery. Television and print advertisements play a role in teaching the minds of women on what types of appearances are attractive and what facial cosmetic surgery is all about. Furthermore, these women believe that the results of the surgery help them increase their self-confidence which leads to sociability. However, no significant changes were made in their relationships with other people. Overall, the primary objective of undergoing facial cosmetic surgery for these women is to enhance physical appearance and the results increase their self-confidence and in return they become more sociable.
