Abstract/Summary

With globalization, companies now find themselves having to operate in other countries or deal with other companies to grow or at the least, survive in today’s competitive markets. Specifically, the worldwide noodle industry is growing at 12% per annum. Meanwhile, the noodle industry in the Philippines is growing at 10% per annum. Given this, XYZ Corporation, a local noodle-manufacturing firm in the Philippines has initiated plans to export its products to other countries in lieu of its goal of expanding its market through increase in sales volume. As such, it has developed plans of obtaining certifications that would facilitate its entrance into various foreign markets, and one of these is the ISO 9001:2000 certification, which is an internationally accepted standard for quality management systems. However, the company does not have a formal documentation of its quality systems and processes. As such, it is important to start with a proper documentation manual of the company’s current quality system, which will be the starting point for XYZ Corporation to determine where it currently stands to get an ISO 9001:2000 certification. Being an action-oriented research, the researchers’ primary objective is to document a quality manual, which is one of the basic requirements of the standard, through secondary research, interviews with top management and observation of company processes. This, in turn, illustrates the current quality management system of the company. Through this, the company would be able to see which requirements have already been complied with, those which need further improvement, and those which are lacking in the company’s current quality management system, as required by the ISO 9001:2000 standard. Of the standard’s requirements, 88% already exist in the company’s quality management system. However, 45% of these need further improvement to reach ISO certifiable level and only 12% are clearly lacking in the company’s current quality management system. Given these, XYZ Corporation has to continue undertaking the documentation of its company processes, procedures, work instructions, and records to finally comply with the requirements of the ISO 9001:2000 standard. This will then be a stepping stone not only for further improving its quality system but also for obtaining other certifications that would help the company in its goal of expanding its market through increase in sales volume.
