Abstract/Summary

Since setting up a person’s own business entails huge risks, businessmen and investors have found a new way to achieve a successful business without taking great risks, and that is through franchising. Fundamentals of franchising entail that it is essential for the franchisors to provide their success formula to the franchisees efficiently. Since strong franchises are living and evolving, the total knowledge of the franchise cannot be limited to its original knowledge, rather it needs ongoing development and implementation of the franchise package. This suggests that knowledge management is inherently present in a franchising network. Bench, a garment retailer engaged in franchising locally and internationally, is the main focus of the study. By using an in-depth case study, the proponents investigated on the knowledge management practices innately present in its franchising network. This was done through a descriptive research using secondary sources such as: literature, past studies, publications, scholarly journals and other documents and reports related to the study. These sources were first utilized to gather the franchising practices and tools in the six functions of the franchisor’s organizational structure namely: marketing, research and development, distribution and logistics, legal, accounting and finance as well as operations. These data were then compared to the knowledge management cycle framework to arrive at a list of KM tools used in the franchising network. vii Firsthand data collected through interviews with the resource person, Ms. Juliet Contreras, the franchise head of Bench, was used to investigate the different practices and tools employed in the company’s franchising network. A comparison was made between the second hand data results and first hand outputs to determine and to assess Bench’s completeness in the KM cycle. Conclusions were drawn and a proposed operational framework was made as recommendation for further study.
