Abstract/Summary

This study is an exploratory-descriptive study that seeks to understand the perceived forms, functions, and effects of humor for the individual in the advertising setting. The sample of the study consists of 15 informants, 10 males and five females, from the creative department of two different advertising agencies. Majority of the respondents have a college degree in fine arts, and two informants graduating with BS degrees, the age range of the sample was 22-34, with an average age of 27. Informants were asked for their socio demographic characteristics, perceived forms, functions, and effects of humor. The data gathered showed three main bodies of humor: 1) stories or anecdotes, under this fall green jokes, smart/witty jokes, personal e-mails, and funny experiences; 2) humorous behavior or actions, below this are impersonations, pranks, slapstick, wordplay, and sarcasm; and 3) humor from media, which includes humor from other advertisements, television shows, and movies. This study also illustrated humors functions for the individual in the work setting including being able to deal with stress better, makes work load feel lighter, gets the attention of people, and keeps employees‟ minds thinking. Functions of humor to the work team in the work setting were also looked into in this study. Functions of humor for the work team found are that 1) humor improves creativity, 2) bonds the work team, 3) improves communication among officemates, 4) entertains people, 5) eases stress of working late, critiquing other's advertisements, 6) and takes away the routine in work which is said to kill a persons creativity. The corresponding effects of humor for the individual and work team in the work setting were found to improve creativity, improve interpersonal skills, and lighten work.
