Abstract/Summary

This study describes the factors and circumstances of blaming as witnessed by personnel of fast-food establishments found in Metro Manila. It also examines the consequences of blaming, as well as the management of these consequences in order to situate the phenomenon of blaming within the workplace setting. The study is descriptive in nature, and utilizes qualitative analysis in providing the interpretation of data gathered through the use of indepth interviews as these are facilitated by an interview guide. The respondents for the study were taken from two different fast-food establishments located within the Metro Manila area. These respondents were selected based on criteria set by the researchers themselves. Moreover, the fast-food establishments were selected specifically due to their popularity and are differentiated due to the nature of the establishments wherein one is a multinational corporation while the other is national/local corporation. Major findings of the study include how the presence of factors -- both organizational and individual in respect -- as well as the circumstances or events of error as these are categorized under the four types, influence the occurrence of blaming itself. Results also indicate a variety of consequences, these again belonging to both the organizational and individual levels, as direct results of the occurrence of blaming. Following this, strategies for management were also indicated in the results, though these focus specifically on the consequences of blaming and not on the prevention and management of the occurrence of blaming itself. Finally, the study establishes that there is a relation between the indicated factors, circumstances, and consequences of blaming, as well as the strategies employed in order to provide resolutions for these consequences. Results are illustrated through the comparison and interpretation of data with the aid of previous literature gathered. The literature provided in the study focus specifically on the concepts and theories surrounding groups and group dynamics, as well as concepts dealing with errors and the varying types of error. These concepts allowed for the situation of blaming as an outcome of error, and how this -- blaming -- affects the working relations of individuals within groups, the interrelatedness of these groups, as well as the delivery of services that these individuals and groups are accountable for. Recommendations are listed in order to improve the aspects of the study for future research.
