Abstract/Summary

This paper presents a comprehensive discussion of the equation r = sin nO of the Polar Coordinate System. The equation r = sin nO is also known as the equation of a rose with n petals if n is odd and 2n petals if n is even. This paper also tackles some concepts in Group Theory.

All of the formulas stated in the theorems in this thesis are results given by Dr. Peter M. Maurer in his article A Rose is a Rose... which appeared in the September, 1987 issue of The American Mathematical Monthly Volume 94, Number 7. This thesis also discusses some algorithms which produces the graph of r = sin n).

A computer program using Microsoft Visual Studio 6.0 and Microsoft Visual C++ 6.0 was provided to better illustrate the remarkable graphs formed from this particular equation.
