Abstract/Summary

This study examines the knowledge, attitudes and practices (KAP) of households in the Core House regarding Solid Waste Management (SWM). The study seeks to determine whether there is a significant relationship between selected socio-demographic characteristics, namely age, gender and educational attainment and KAP.

The researchers used two data gathering measures: survey by interview schedule and in-depth interviews. The survey by interview schedule was conducted among fifty (50) respondents. It covers SWM knowledge, attitudes and practices at household level. In-depth interviews were conducted with two respondents from the city hall and the barangay unit. Data were cross tabulated and analyzed using the Chi Square test.

The results of the study show that respondents are conscious about the solid waste situation in the country and highly familiar with basic principles of solid waste management. However, majority of the population are not familiar with SWM policies and ordinances. With regards to practices, the most recognized waste disposal method is waste collection by truck. Respondents also display positive attitudes toward solid waste management in terms of the role of the government and the citizens in solid waste management and its maintenance. Plastic, paper and food residues are the most generated solid wastes in the households. In terms of the relationship between selected socio-demographic characteristics and KAP, educational attainment was found to be significantly associated with the knowledge and practices of feeding wastes to animals, while age was associated with the practice of burying waste.
