Abstract/Summary
There are twelve courier firms operating internationally in the Philippines. They are under the jurisdiction, supervision and control of the Post Master registered under the Bureau of Posts. The industry has been experiencing a continuous growth. In terms of market share by volume, the top five are DHL, TNT, UPS, OCS, and Fedex. On the other hand, the top five in terms of the number of clients are DHL, Fedex, UPS, TNT and OCS. The overall performance of the industry can be classified as a good one. There was an increase in the gross revenue despite the political uncertainties in 1986. The net income of the industry has been improving and decreases were brought about by the increases in expenses, rather than decreases in sales volume.
The emergence of the courier service industry was brought about by the growing need of business firms to disseminate information in a faster pace. The public including the business sector and general mailing public wants to have an effective and reliable communication. This characteristic is greatly needed by clients like the multinationals, buying offices, exporters, shipping companies and offshore banks. In choosing which courier firm to patronize, they usually base it on the quality of prompt service they provide.
Inspite of the numerous courier firms, there are still some potential markets. For instance, Federal Express has not yet tapped the offshore banks as their clients. To achieve its goal of reaching a wider market, strategies like creating awareness through advertising and promotion should be employed.
The courier service industry continues to grow as the economy improves. It has become a necessity for business firms to avail of the services since communication is one factor needed to become successful. Also, the existence of courier firms may provide an opportunity for the improvement of services on the part of both the Bureau of Post and the courier companies as well, thereby, achieving higher standards of services rendered. This will enable the government and the private sector to work hand in hand in serving the public better.
