Abstract/Summary

This study aimed at discovering the themes, values and perceived effects of the music of Filipino contemporary rock and jazz bands. The profile of the members of the band and the dominant themes and values embodied in the compositions of these bands and the similarities and differences of the themes and values found in the songs of the two different categories of music. Which channel of music is the most influential and the perceived effects of these compositions on the youth.

The following research methods were used by the researchers to gather data. A survey for the youth respondents, key-informant interviews for the bands and content analysis on the songs of the bands.

The researchers found out that the similarity in age, educational attainment, and a sense of belonging makes the bands the voice of the youth. The researchers also found out that regardless of the category of music, the most pre-dominant theme is about love and its many facets and the perceived effects of these compositions on the youth is on their views about love, life, and values. In addition, the most influential channel or medium of music is the radio since it is less expensive and highly accessible.
