Abstract/Summary

This systems study is concerned with the unloading and loading operation of beer at the San Miguel Polo Brewery Plant located at Valenzuela, Metro Manila. Trucks enter the Plant carrying empty beer bottles coming from the different sales offices. In the plant, the bottles are unloaded after which, the trucks are loaded with pure Pale Pilsen and/or mixed goods (Cali, Blue Ice, etc.). The truck then delivers the goods to the different sales offices.

It was observed by the proponents that all beer trucks exceed the company's goal of a one hour turn-around time by an average of 2 hours and 52 minutes to unload empty bottles and load finished goods. The turn around time is the time which begins the moment the truck enters the plant until it leaves the plant. A long turn around time delays the delivery of finished goods to the sales offices, which resulted to an opportunity loss of PhP 136,025,856 for the year 1998. The proponents identified the most probable causes to be the following: (1) forklift operators do not start and end their work shifts on the scheduled time, and (2) the present number of forklift trucks assigned in the unloading and loading areas are not enough for the system's operation.

The proposed solutions for the identified causes of the problem are the following: (1) the implementation of a reward system, and (2) the addition of a forklift truck in each of the unloading and loading areas.

Simulation was used to validate the proposed solutions. The software used was ARENA. Results showed that if forklift operators follow their work schedule on time, and if a forklift truck in each of the unloading and loading areas is added, these would speed up the operation and thus, lessen the turn around time to 58 minutes.
