Abstract/Summary
A difference equation is an equation relating the values of a function y and one or more of its differences y, 2y, 3y, ... for each x-value and it is said to be linear with constant coefficients if it can be written in the form y(x+n) + a1, y(x+n-1) + ... + 3n-1 y(x+1) + ayn (x) = r(x) where a1 a2 ... an are constants and r(x) is an arbitrary function defined for x = 1.2.3. ... [3]This thesis presented an alternative method in finding the particular solution of a linear difference equation in which the method of undetermined coefficients is applicable. The alternative method was developed by R.C. Gupta in his article entitled On Linear Difference Equations with Constant Coefficients: An alternative to the method of undetermined coefficients . Properties of operators and preliminary concepts on difference equations which are necessary in the discussions were also presented in this paper. Furthermore, this paper also presented an algorithm in finding the different solutions of a second order linear difference equation which was developed in a computer program.
