Abstract/Summary

The study is concerned with the conceptualizations of the hearing impaired about the hearing society they interact with. Specifically, this study sought to address the following: 1) the personal experiences of the hearing impaired in different social settings 2) definitions, perceptions, and conceptualizations of the hearing imparied about the members of the non-disabled society that they interact with and 3) effects of these experiences on their social interactons. The objectives of the study were carried out using a descriptive research design. Questionnaires were given out to each of the ten respondents to provide preliminary information about the cases. This was followed by in-depth interviews that were conducted at a later time with each of the ten respondents. The interviews were conducted with the help of interpreters as the proponents did not have enough time to master the American Sign Language. The findings of the study may not prove to be conclusive as the study had concentrated on only ten respondents. Aside from this, eight of the ten respondents were males and the other two females. The study therefore cannot generalize it's findings as to the conceptualizations that the hearing impaired have had of the non-disabled population. The results of the study have shown that the hearing impaired have a rather ambivalent perception of the hearing. It has also been found that the hearing impaired tend to identify with those like them.
