Abstract/Summary
This study determined the trends and patterns of crime and delinquency and crime prevention strategies in an urban municipality of Las Pinas, Metro Manila from 1991 to 1994. Content analysis of 804 cases in police blotter books during the first quarter of each year was utilized to determine the trend and patterns of crime and delinquency. Likewise, the background characteristics of suspects such as age, sex, place of occurrence, civil status and employment were used to identify the crime patterns. Crime statistics such as crime rates, crime volume and juvenile delinquency rates were obtained for each of the major classifications of crimes, i.e., index crimes, non-index crimes, and juvenile delinquency. Key informant interviews were conducted to determine the crime prevention strategies implemented in the barangays. The findings showed that there has been a declining trend of crime rates in Las Pinas. Crime against persons and crime against property are the predominant crimes in the municipality. These crimes are concentrated in the major business and commercial zones of Las Pinas. It also determined a pattern in terms of characteristics of suspects and a direct relationship between the place of occurrence of crime and the residence of the suspects. The emphasis of crime prevention strategies implemented in the communities by barangays, citizens' organizations and the local police units are directed towards the prevention of common crimes occuring in the barangay.
