Abstract/Summary
The main objective of this study is to investigate the health status of urban poor preschoolers and relate this with schooling, employment, and the health management practices of the mothers. The study centered on answering the following questions, namely: (1) Is the educational backround of mothers related to the health status of their preschoolers?, (2) Are variables peculiar to the employment of mothers related to the health status of their preschoolers?, (3) Are health management practices of mothers related to the health status of their preschoolers?The research design is basically survey method. It is also correlational in nature. It is supplemented by six cases of life histories. The data were acquired by using three instruments. They are as follows: survey questionnaires, guide questions, bar scales and tape measures.The 84 mother respondents came from Baranggay 12 of Kalookan and from Bagong Tanyag of Taguig. They are mothers aged 20 to 40 years, having at least 1 preschooler.Findings show that the schooling, the health management practices, and the employment of mothers are significantly related to the health status of preschoolers, specifically postnatal check-ups, immunization, length of breastfeeding, weaning age, consultation with doctors, consultation with traditional healers, and application of self-medication.
