Abstract/Summary

A study was conducted to determine the prevalence rate of Ascaris lumbricoides, Trichuris trichura and hookworm (Ancylostoma duodenale and Necator americanus) on schoolchildren aged 3-10 studying in Cityland Preschool, Shrine of Divine Mercy Day-Care, San Roque Preschool and Bonifacio Javier Elementary School in Mandaluyong City. The prevalence of the parasites according to sex was likewise considered. A total of 110 stool samples were collected during the months of July to December 1997. The Direct Fecal Smear method was used. Results showed that A. lumbricoides had an over-all prevalence rate of 19%, T. trichura had 5%, and a mixed infection of 5%. A. lumbricoides infection was also higher in males at 23% than in females at 14%. On the other hand, T. trichura infection was higher in females at 8% than in males at 3%. Mixed infection was also noted and was found to be higher in females at 8% than in males at 3%.
