Abstract/Summary

Five brands of locally-available astringents (Eskinol Classic, Splash Extract, Nature's Touch Tawas, Desire Tawas, and Citrobelle) sold in the market were studied. A sample of each brand of astringents was collected and analyzed for their microbicidal activities. The minimum time of exposure for the test microorganisms to the astringents were determined. Results showed that all of the brands of the astringents used were effective as antimicrobial agents. Two out of five astringents namely Desire Tawas and Citrobelle were proven to be more effective since they were able to kill three of the four test microorganisms namely Staphylococcus aureus, Escherichia coli, and Candida albicans within 1-minute time of exposure. Pseudomonas aeruginosa was killed only after 2-minute time of exposure to the two astringents. All other brands such as Eskinol Classic, Splash Extract, and Nature's Touch Tawas require approximately 2-10 minutes time of exposure for effective microbicidal activity.
