Abstract/Summary

This paper looks to examine and critique the ever-changing dynamics of masculinity in the culture of video gaming and its competitive dimension known as eSports within the Philippines, particularly Manila. This thesis lays a groundwork which combines textual analysis of video games as well as through social immersion, interactions and interviews in order to provide a wider cultural insight that would provide a glance towards untouched topic of video game culture in the Philippines.;"This thesis will look into gender performativity, geek masculinity, and its projection through one of the most popular MOBAS in the Philippines League of legends. Using Judith Butler's gender performance framework and a constructed video game framework. The research will analyze as to how the game through its various dynamics and characters project, subvert, and reconstruct geek masculinity. The research then analyzes various social gaming events that range from the small, being computer shops around Taft Avenue, to the large with the Pinoy Gaming Festival 2017 Summer Assembly, as an example and how these spaces exhibit geek masculinity outside of the virtual realm."
