Abstract/Summary

This study presents a Cigarette Smoker Monitoring System, which may be a possible solution to the worsening pollution level in the country. This system aims to detect if a smoking activity is present in the area. It is a Wireless Sensor Network that involves sensor nodes and cameras that communicate through Zigbee modules. This Wireless Sensor Network can be summarized into three phases namely the Activation of Camera Through Sensor Nodes, Image Processing, and Alarming of the Monitoring Station.

The first phase, the Activation of Camera Through Sensor Nodes, requires smoke for the activation of the sensor nodes. When the sensor nodes are activated, the cameras would also be activated through Zigbee and would proceed with the second phase which is Image Processing. The Image Processing will be run through MATLAB to confirm if there really is a smoking activity. It consists of three stages particularly face detection, extraction of ROI image, and conversion of ROI image to and evaluation of binary image, and conversion of ROI image to and evaluation of binary image. If the image processing results to a positive, the processing unit connected to the camera will send a signal informing the monitoring station of a confirmed smoking activity.
