Abstract/Summary
Informal networks are very common in organizations today. It is described as a network of relationships that employees from across functions and divisions form to accomplish tasks fast. Informal networks can either strengthen or weaken the operations of the company depending on how the management uses the influence of the network. Often times, management does not know how to handle the informal network and worse, ignores its existence. Another significance of this study is to fill the research gap regarding Social Network Analysis of informal networks in the context of a business group.
The general objective of this study was to analyze the informal network of seven (7) closely related companies under the Lina Group of Companies. These companies are: Air 21, Cargohaus Inc., LGC Logistics, U-Freight Philippines, U-Ocean, Linaheim Corporate Services Inc., and Linaheim Corporate Travel and Tours. This study focused on identifying the employees who are the common role players in the informal network of Lina Group of Companies namely: central connectors, boundary spanners, information brokers, peripheral specialists and decision making advisers. A five (5) item questionnaire was used in collecting data for the study. These questionnaires were answered by the different company representatives, specifically the executives and top managers of each company. This study determined the common role players of the business group through Social Network Analysis (SNA) and using the SNA software UCINet.
Results show that Mr. Al Villadolid and Mr. Elmer Ilagan have the highest result for the central connectors, Ms. Vicky Villarosa has the highest result for the boundary spanners, Ms. Edith Dizon has the highest result for information broker, Mr. Elmer Ilagan has the highest result for peripheral specialist and Mr. Rudy Fulo has the highest result for decision making adviser. The results that the researchers got for the informal network generally resulted to a low mean for the business group. This means that there is no strong connection between the informal network and the business group under study. These results imply that the formal positions of the Lina Group of Companies somehow fit with the results of the informal roles and that the significance of informal roles in Lina Group of Companies is minimal.
