Abstract/Summary
The purpose of this paper is to identify whether the usage of electronic commerce as measured by system reliability, ease of use & information system use in small enterprises situated in Ermita, Manila has improved the efficiency of its supply chain as measured by cost, fill rate, confirmed fill rate, delay & response delay. The researchers proposed an evaluative research in order to determine the effects of electronic commerce. It made use of interviews and surveys among a sample size collected within the Ermita area. It used small enterprises operating within the quick-service restaurant industry.
The framework employed by the paper has a dependent variable usage of electronic commerce as defined by two measurements provided by DeLone and Mclean (2001). An independent variable supply chain efficiency as measured by the indicators cited by Gale et al (2001) and was further elaborated by the metrics used by Kleijnen and Smits (2003). It aims to evaluate if the use of electronic commerce has an asymmetricaL relationship to the efficiency of the supply chain.
The researchers have used Pearson's correlation test to determine the relationship between system reliability, ease of use of the information system as to cost, fill rate, confirmed fill rate, delay & response delay. The results of the study have showed that electronic commerce is only able to impact confirmed fill rate. The findings have disproved most foreign models regarding electronic commerce, the researchers have narrowed down the causes to three major problems lack of infrastructure, low degree of investment in formation technology, human error & resistance to change. However, it was also discovered that despite these problems the supply chain of Filipino small enterprises are still efficient mainly due to Filipino culture and the people's familiarity of computer systems. The researchers recommend that future studies be done in order to discover variables that are able to accurately measure the impact of electronic commerce to the efficiency of supply chains in the Philippines.
