Abstract/Summary

Mango inspection is a necessary process to choose mangoes for export to countries like Japan, Korea and the United States. The traditional method of inspection of mangoes is manual, which leads to issues of consistency and lack of a clear standard. Fatigue also causes humans to err in judgment. Hence, there is a need to work on an automated solution for inspection of mangoes. This automated solution will perform visual inspection of the surface of the mango and adjudge it as either pass or fail. Mangoes are transported in a conveyor with a clear bottom to enable a camera to take a snapshot of the bottom area. This is coupled with two other cameras to inspect the top area and the stem. Experiments were conducted to identify a configuration for the lights and cameras. The results of the automated mango inspection system correspond well to the actual ratings provided by mango exporters.
