Abstract/Summary
The thesis deals with the automation of the whole rewinding process of price tag tapes. The manual process includes cutting, pasting and uploading of the said rolls which is currently slow and produces a lot of waste. Rewinding is done by using an on-off button.
With the proper use of concepts in mechanical design, such as utilization of the CATIA software, the group was able to design the mechanical components of the machine like the main frame, gears, cutting mechanism, feeder and rewinding shafts. The group also made use of different ideas in designing electronic system such as interfacing a PC using the LPT port to be able to control the different components of the machine. Turbo C program was used to operate the different functions of the machine such as the cutting, pasting, rewinding and unloading of the desired number of price tag tapes.
The experiments conducted on getting the desired results showed that the machine produces more output compared to the existing process. The time of production was cut to at least 50% because of minimal manual involvement that caused the current process to slow down. The automated tape rewinding machine proved to be more advantageous given the improvement in production time and reduction of waste.
With the improvement the group have done on the process of rewinding using the prototype the group have built, the company will have increased productivity, reduced waste generation and greater flexibility in their production.
