Abstract/Summary
Innovation is one of the most important elements of success in the modern business environment. A firm's ability and desire to innovate determines its likelihood of gaining a competitive edge over others and maintaining or even improving its position in the market. Because of this, a large number of authors have written on the factors that lead into successful innovation, the positive effects of such innovation, and the nature of the innovation process itself, to provide organizations with better understanding on why, how, and when innovation takes place.
This paper proposes an analytical application of David Smith's models of innovation on existing Filipino firms, using the variables (1) sources of innovation, (2) nature of the innovation process, (3) importance of external actors, and a number of other areas of descriptive focus. This framework is then used to analyze four identified innovative firms in the Philippines and used to create a number of illustrative case studies with emphasis on the innovation process of each. Each of the participating companies is classified according to the model of innovation that best describes its characteristic and process.
Key findings derived, as well as recommendations made based on these case studies are meant to guide and help future business leaders and existing budding businesses learn from the success and experiences of current innovators. This study will also provide researchers who intend to pursue further on this subject matter, with more information and better understanding on the innovation process and models of some of the top Filipino firms in the country.
