Abstract/Summary

With the growing tourism industry in the Philippines, unsustainable consumption practices endangering ecosystems and natural resources comes with it. Hence, there is a need for greener hotels that are at the heart of the tourism industry. This quantitative study identifies the key drivers and barriers to environmental practices currently practiced among SMHs in Metro Manila. In addition, environmental practices currently practiced among SMHs in terms of energy, conservation, water conservation, waste reduction, and air management are identified as well. The researchers obtained 61 of the 85 surveyed small-medium sized hotels. Findings reveal that majority of the drivers and barriers to environmental practices are internal factors. Major drivers include maintenance issue, potential savings, company image and owner/s environmental attitudes. On the other hand, major barriers include expensive, no competitive advantage, lack of commitment and lack of financial support. Furthermore, majority of the environmental practices currently implemented among SMHs are in terms of waste reduction, water conservation, and energy conservation. These practices includes the installation of Fluorescent light bulbs, purchase supplies, products and condiments in bulk, the use of low flow toilets, and recycling paper. In addition, results reveal that small hotels are less likely to engage in environmental friendly practices than medium hotels.
