Abstract/Summary

Rice is considered to be the most important agricultural crop in the Philippines. Fluctuations in rice prices have significant repercussions in the lives of millions of Filipino consumers. Therefore, it is only important to determine the extent of the National Food Authority's ability to affect rice prices across different regions.

This paper discussed the evolution of the rice industry and its implications. Also, the interventions undertaken by the National Food Authority (NFA) to control rice prices and its economic implications are discussed in this paper.

In order to determine rice prices, the different factors that affect rice prices are laid out in our model. Variables both at the demand and supply side are included to better determine the market price of rice. The mean, standard deviation and coefficient of variation are calculated to examine the correlation that exists between rice prices and rice stocks. On the other hand, the correlation between the NFA rice stock and the three different rice prices namely retail, farmgate and wholesale are determined using the least squares method."
