Abstract/Summary

Driving a vehicle requires a combination of coordinated movements involving vision and motor skills essential to maneuvering the vehicle along the desired path. Of the mentioned necessities, vision is a vital part in a person's ability to drive.

The Intelligent Semi-Self Driven Automobile (ISSDA) is a Remote Controlled (RC) car that performs the task of automatically overtaking another vehicle when the system is activated. The ISSDA along with a dummy RC (vehicle to be overtaken) both travel along a straight, constructed planar highway located in a controlled environment.

ISSDA is a vision-based system that uses different image processing algorithms to allow it to decide and to perform overtaking maneuvers. Images are captured via a mounted camera on the RC and transmitted to a Personal Computer system using RF signals. The computer processes the image, analyzes them and decides on the maneuver to be performed. It then sends back the decision to the RC and allows the RC to perform the maneuver.

The iSSDA system has an overall success rate of 61.90%. For the scenario where the iSSDA RC travels at 20 cm/s and the Dummy RC travels at 15 cm/s, the iSSDA RC had a success rate of 87.14% or 4 out of 7 trials. For the scenario where the iSSDA RC travels at 24 cm/s and the Dummy RC travels at 15 cm/s, the iSSDA RC had a success rate of 57.14% or 4 out of 7 trials. For the scenario where the iSSDA RC travels at 24 cm/s and the Dummy RC travels at 20 cm/s, the iSSDA RC had a success rate of 71.43% or 5 out of 7 trials.
