Abstract/Summary
Karyotyping is an arrangement of chromosomes. It helps determine if there are abnormalities through chromosome count or changes in the structure such as deletion, translocation, duplication and inversion. A normal male and female would have a 46 chromosome count. An abnormal chromosome count, which is greater than or less than 46, would indicate that the person has an abnormality or syndrome.
The study developed karyotyping software for identifying abnormalities in human chromosomes which includes Down syndrome (Trisomy 21) and Edward's syndrome (Trisomy 18). The samples (metaphase image) used in testing the program is a digitized image from St. Lukes Medical Center-Research Biotechnology Division. The group implemented image processing techniques using Matlab in order to accomplish this undertaking. The karyotype displayed used size and centromere location to classify each chromosome according to their group. The GUI allows the user to select a sample from the computer and make a karyotype output. The name of patient, age and gender can also be displayed with the result. The significance of the research is to make karyotyping of medical practitioners easier and faster.
