Abstract/Summary
The relative abundance (g) and scarcity of brown algae (Phaeophyta) in Talin Bay, Matuod, Lian, Batangas in the mangrove area was determined from June to December 1996. Water temperature (27.6-37.9 centigrade), salinity 31.1-33.6 %), pH (6.2-8.0 pH units), dissolved oxygen content (0.5-3.9 mg/L), and water movement (1.7-3.2 g/h) of the water samples were obtained.
Only five species of brown algae can be found in the mangrove area namely: Sargassum glaucescens, S. illicifolium, S. polycystum, Padina australis and Hydroclathrus clathratus. The phaeophytes were abundant in August possibly due to low salinity and fast water movement and scarce in October possibly due to high water temperature and slow water movement.
