Abstract/Summary
The cadmium content of the catfish Clarias batrachus was determined. Fish samples were collected from Danga, Caduang Tete and Colgante rivers. Water samples were also collected. The samples were acid-digested and their absorbances for cadmium were determined using the atomic absorption spectrophotometer. Water quality parameters such as pH, temperature and salinity were measured. The study showed no significant difference between the mean concentrations of cadmium in the muscles of C. batrachus from Danga (0.065 mg/L) and Caduang Tete (0.061 mg/L) rivers. However, the mean concentration of cadmium in the fish samples Colgante River (0.084 mg/L) differed significantly from those collected from the other two rivers. The mean cadmium concentrations in the fish samples from the three rivers were all within the limits set by WHO in 1992, which is 0.5 mg/L. There was no significant difference between the mean concentrations of cadmium in the water samples from Danga (0.078 mg/L) and Caduang Tete (0.076 mg/L) rivers and also between Danga and Colgante (0.087 mg/L) rivers. The mean concentration of cadmium in the water samples from Colgante and Caduang Tete rivers differed significantly. The water samples collected from the three rivers exceeded the limits set by the DENR Administrative Order # 34 (series of 1990), which is 0.01 mg/L.
