Abstract/Summary

Cooperatives serve as a venue for the lower income groups to still have enough resource back-up to continue their operations despite their obvious lack in these aspects. Cooperatives can be seen as an important factor in the alleviation of poverty in the country because they provide people with jobs, capital resources, investing opportunities, numerous market channels, and others. It is for this reason that this study was conducted. There have been a large number of dissolved and cancelled cooperatives in Laguna alone despite its noble objectives for its members. This shows that there are some serious problems with a lot of these cooperatives due to poor management, lack of planning and development, improper implementation of operations, and others. The Cooperative Development Authority in Laguna provided the researchers with a list of millionaire cooperatives. A survey was conducted concerning the operations, planning and development and management of these successful cooperatives to determine what are the key factors for their success. A financial ratio analysis was also conducted to look at the performance of these cooperatives financially. The results showed that the primary contributors to the success of these cooperatives are ranged according to the following: Planning and Development, Management, and lastly Operations. The financial ratios also highlighted some areas of strengths and weaknesses among the cooperatives. The success of these cooperatives should serve as a guide for those cooperatives who also want to develop a cooperative to help uplift the welfare of the community.
