Abstract/Summary

Examination of muscle tissue smear preparations from 125 slaughtered cattle showed 24 (19.2 percent) positive for both mature young and developing sarcocysts ( metrocytes ). Infection rates among 3,4 and 5 years old cattle are 13.63 percent, 24.2 percent and 16.7 percent respectively. Of the 24 infected cows, 3 (17.6 percent) were females and 21 (19.4 percent) were males. Of the 115 Australian Brahman cattle examined, 23 (20 percent) were infected compared to only 1 (10 percent) for the Native cattle. Gross morphology of cardiac tissues positive for sascocysts exhibits dark spots when viewed with a compound light microscope. Gross morphology of sarcocysts and cystwall noted in the present study suggests at least two possible etiologic agents of sarcocystosis, namely, Sarcocystis cruzi and Sarcocystis hirsuta or Sarcocystis hominis.
